The homes in this coveted neighborhood feature modern contemporary designs that stand in contrast to the Old World feel of neighboring San Juan. When the owners of one luxury estate in Estancias de Torrimar sought to create a shaded outdoor kitchen space for their home, they chose to work with Azenco’s Caribbean dealer, SHO-Pros, to craft an adjustable louvered roof pergola that seamlessly fit the elevated design of their home.

Project Overview: Luxury Outdoor Kitchen with Motorized Adjustable Louvered roof
Residents of Puerto Rico love the island destination for its tropical climate. With temperatures rarely dipping below 80 degrees, finding ways to escape the powerful Caribbean sun, while still enjoying the amazing outdoors, is always a priority for island residents. Puerto Rico also sees a great deal of rain, averaging 190 days of rain annually, and tropical storms passing the island regularly.
When these homeowners sought to build a poolside oasis for their luxury home, they wanted an innovative structure that would unlock all of the outdoor entertainment potential of the patio, and elevate the architectural styling of the home. The design team at SHO-Pros took on the challenge and crafted a motorized adjustable louvered roof pergola featuring a one-of-a-king three post column design with an integrated sensor system to automatically control the louvered roof.
With sun and rain protection for their new patio, these homeowners elevated the pool deck with an outdoor grilling station, integrated LED lighting, and an outdoor dining table.
Design Challenges: Louvers Oriented East
Situated at the junction of the luxurious home’s kitchen, living room and in-ground pool, this patio was the ideal space to create an outdoor cooking station and dining space to compliment the pool deck. The first design challenge for the SHO-Pros team was to give this modern pergola some attention-grabbing architectural flair that would seamlessly fit the rest of the home’s contemporary styling. With the R-Blade pergola attached to the home on two sides, the support structure could be designed with just a single exterior column. The team considered several pergola ideas before imagining a one-of-a-kind support column that was made up of three parallel posts to create leading lines from the ground up to the pergola roof. They also mounted the pergola louvers perpendicular to the lines created by the architectural columns for even more visual appeal.
Another design and engineering challenge the SHO-Pros team encountered was preparing this louvered pergola to resist the high winds and tropical storms that impact Puerto Rico. Designing a pergola attached to the home provided substantial connection points for the louvered roof, but the team also incorporated some high-tech storm resistance. Integrated into the motorized louver system is an autonomous sensor array that monitors the weather and opens and closes the louvers during rain showers and high winds. Not only does the pergola automatically close the roof when rain is detected, but it monitors for heavy winds and automatically opens the louvers to guard against potentially-damaging updrafts from the heavy gusts.
Finally, the design team wanted to ensure the new outdoor space was outfitted for the most humid days in the tropics, and well-lit for evening enjoyment. For calm days when the natural airflow through the louvered pergola was not enough to keep the space cool, the team included patio fans integrated with the pergola roof. To create the perfect evening ambiance, LED lights were embedded in the perimeter of the pergola roof providing just the right amount of illumination for a Caribbean evening.
Color Selection: Duo tones
A priority for this renovation project was to make the new covered patio fit seamlessly with the high-quality fit and finish of the entire home. The R-Blade’s clean exterior lines, and high-quality powder coating ensured the new pergola would deliver the luxury styling these customers envisioned. To seamlessly fit the new pergola with the home’s existing style, the SHO-Pros team clad the unique three-post support column and the pergola frame in a bronze powder coating. To give the pergola an aesthetic boost and tie it in with the surrounding tropical landscape. The adjustable louvers were clad in a wood finish of European Birch wood grain.
