Ultimately, a customized Azenco R-BLADE™ adjustable louvered roof pergola blended seamlessly with the existing design aesthetic the customer envisioned.

Project overview
From the art deco architecture of South Beach to the murals that define Wynwood, Miami, FL, is an artist’s paradise. While the hectic nights of other neighborhoods might beckon to young artists, for one well-established professional painter, the laidback tropical vibes of South Miami’s residential streets have become home. Like all artists, they have brought their unique design aesthetic to their home, and its unique outdoor courtyard. Connecting the lush vegetation of the neighborhood to their interior courtyard, these homeowners created a miniature jungle on their paver and grass patio. With a very specific design aesthetic in mind, they contacted Azenco dealer SHO-Pros to design a complimentary pergola with all the modern amenities they desired.
Design challenge
The interior courtyard of this magnificent home is beautifully appointed with large pavers set into perfectly manicured grass. The look helps bring the surrounding neighborhood’s lush vegetation into this interior courtyard. To ensure the grass as well as the numerous planters containing lavish tropical plants would still be able to get some sun, SHO-Pros designers opted to bring an R-Blade motorized adjustable louvered roof pergola to this courtyard. With its roof operated by remote control, the homeowners could easily open the roof to allow full sun to reach the patio, or adjust the roof to create shade. With the louvers completely closed, they could even enjoy the afternoon rain showers outdoors.
With multiple doors accessing the outdoor courtyard, a top priority for the customer was to maintain a natural flow throughout the space. The client also wanted to create the maximum amount of shaded space on this large 40-foot-wide courtyard. To meet this challenge, the designer team customized two louvered pergola zones to meet perfectly in the center of the courtyard while anchoring to the opposite walls of the home. They also strategically located supporting columns to ensure necessary stability while creating an archway-like feel to the walkway through the courtyard.
Customizations Ensure Plenty of Airflow
While the gapless louvers of the R-BLADE’s rain-tight roof would create plenty of protection from South Florida’s notorious afternoon showers, the homeowners also wanted to make sure the courtyard maintained plenty of air circulation to counteract the often-humid climate. Incorporating fan beams into the center of each louvered zone allowed the designers to add outdoor ceiling fans to each side of the pergola. With the fans positioned directly over the outdoor dining space and the lounge area, these homeowners could enjoy a nice breeze regardless of where on their covered patio they chose to relax. To ensure plenty of clearance for the outdoor patio fans, the designers also extended the support columns to 14 feet making the space feel even more open and spacious. Additionally, to ensure their evening entertainment could carry on through the night, SHO-Pros also embedded LED ramping lights allowing the overhead fixtures to be dimmed for more intimate evenings.

The end result was a beautiful pergola system which seamlessly flows with the home’s existing style to maintain the perfectly cultivated aesthetic harmony of the courtyard.
